Lawnmower blades need occasional sharpening either once or twice a year. Without proper sharpening, the blades will rip the grass rather than trimming it. Torn blades are highly likely to catch diseases, pests, and UV damage. With that being said, it’s important for homeowners to check their lawnmower blades and have them sharpened every now and then.

While there are many ways to sharpen your lawnmower blade, angle grinder has proven the fastest and easiest method to grind out the cuts and sharpen the edges of the tool. So far, angel grinder has proven quite a versatile and flexible tool that gives the perfect finishing to lawnmower blades. The tool is especially known for grinding metal and cutting pavers and tiles. The uses of angle grinders include polishing, sanding, and sharpening the objects.

In this post, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of sharpening the lawnmower blades with an angle grinder. Let’s have a look!

Step 1: Access the Spinning Blades

First things first, make sure that you have unplugged the wire before accessing lawnmower blades. This ensures that the machine does not start while you are accessing the blades. Start with the removal of the gas cap from the machine. Once done, wrap a plastic cover in the opening and restore the gas cap to keep the gas from leaking through the opening.

In order to get to the revolving blade, you need to turn the machine on the side in such a way that the carburetor faces up.

Step 2: Removing the Nut from Blade

Right in the middle of the blade, you will find a nut that needs to be taken off. You could remove the nut from the blade with the help of a socket wrench. You can spray some lubricant on the nut to remove it gently from the blade. However, some nuts are so tightly attached to the blade that they take several minutes to come out.

It is important to ensure that the blades do not spin while you are removing the nuts. Try to fasten a scrap wood using C-clamp right beneath the lawnmower. Once you have taken the nut out of the blade, take the blade off the machine gently.

Step 3: Place the Blade on a Table

Put the blade on a table and make sure that it’s tightened. The blade must not move during the procedure. There are two cutting edges on the lawnmower blades. These cutting ends are located opposite one another. This means you could only work on one edge of the tool at a time.

Step 4: Clean the Blades

Grab a rigid wire brush and sweep all the filth, dirt, dust, and debris off the blade. If the wire brush doesn’t remove the debris, use coarse sandpaper, and clean the blades gently.

Step 5: Prepare the Angle Grinder

To grind the blade, you will have to fit a grinding stone disk in the grinder. Though you could also use sandpapers and brushes for the process, a grinding stone is a must to sharpen the metal blade. Before you start the procedure, wear hand gloves and safety gear such as goggles or eye masks to keep your eyes safe from the flying sparks.

Step 6: Run the Angle Grinder Along the Edges of the Blade

The next step is to hold the device at a 90-degree angle with the edge of the blade. Start operating the angle grinder along the thin edges of the blade to settle any scratch or nicks that are formed when your blade hit rocks. Make sure that angle grinder takes out the metal super fast. It is, therefore, advisable to run it efficiently and cut off little at a time.

Step 7: Lining up the Grinder with Blade

Arrange the angle grinder with the blade in the same way as it is arranged in the factories to sharpen the blade. As mentioned before, the grinder can remove the metal quickly. Make sure to line it up properly with the blade so that it removes only a small portion of the metal while giving a great level of sharpness.

Step 8: Sharpen the Edges

Operate the machine along the edge of the blade and keep the speed constant so that the entire edge sharpens. You need to continue to file down the blade’s edges until you spot a clean and bare metal with sharp edges. Follow the same procedure with the other end of the blade. Once you are done with both edges, fasten the blade to the lawnmower by restoring the nut.
