Juniper Bonsai is not a flowering plant. But, It is so easy to maintain. This is a plant that is native to China. Many people love this plant because it is a low growing bonsai tree. Its leaves are lush green and remain so if it is well-taken care.

It adapts easily to indoor conditions. It is a slow growing plant but it has longevity. It is a bonsai tree that is well suited for beginners. It is a hardy plant that requires some level of cold weather in order to grow healthily. This is an excellent plant for both indoor and outdoor beautifications.

Juniper Bonsai Climate Conditions

It is a deciduous tree that requires the same temperature changes whether during summer, fall or spring. In order for the plant to do well, it would need some level of humidity that is between 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The plant has to be indoors during winter. This is its dormancy period. This is an important period for the plant. Without this dormancy period, the plant may become unhealthy and prone to diseases. This is the period to mulch the pot and soil.

Allow the tree to rest on a wall in order to prevent it from wind disturbances. Outdoor can be very vulnerable to extreme cold weather. Watering

Juniper needs watering when you notice that the top part of the soil is dry. You can use a watering can with spray nozzle or hose. You need to water the plant every day during summer. The plant needs less water during winter.

Pruning

Juniper has a growth pattern. It usually has long and flowing branches. The plant responds well to reshaping and wiring. The plant needs major pruning that should be performed during spring or fall. Do not prune during summer. On the other hand, maintenance pruning is permissible in all seasons and should be regular too.

In order to allow for the development of new foliage, just nip out the new soft shoots with your fingers. It is important to prune all undesirable branches when you are re-potting. It turns brown if you use scissors. Pruning should be in cascade or semi-cascade style so that the plant can retain its small size.

Soil

Juniper tree can stay for years in the same soil. It loses its nutrients that it gets from the soil during this long period. The nutritional supplement is very important for the soil in order for the tree to grow healthily. Organic fertilizer is highly recommended. Apply the right quantity. Do not overdose the plant.

Lighting

Juniper needs shaded sunlight outdoors. It requires early morning sun and has to be returned to shade in the afternoon. Avoiding exposing it to harsh afternoon sun. Allow it to get a minimum of 3 hours of direct sunlight in a day.

Re-potting

Juniper needs to be re-potted at least in every 3 to 5 years. If you just received the plant, you have to wait for one year before re-potting it. Using the bonsai soil is very important. This is because it makes water to drain very easily. It also prevents the plant’s roots from rotting. Avoid using the regular soil if you want the plant to live. Use wire to tie the plant together. Use a pair of pliers to tighten the wire around the branches.
